Halloween o/or Castañada?

The Castañada (Chestnut party) is a popular, traditional way of celebrating 31st October or All Saints Day on 1st November in Barcelona.

So, what about Halloween? The strong influence of American culture has meant that this way of celebrating 31st October has become quite popular here also. Although the different ways of celebrating this particular time of the year are probably all rooted in the same rituals, here we don’t traditionally dress up as skeletons, monsters or other unattractive creatures. Instead, almost as a parallel to the Celtic way of celebrating this night by leaving food for ancestors who come back from the spirit world to visit their old homes, we fill our stomachs! It’s traditional here to eat chestnuts, sweet potatoes and the small marzipan-based cakes known as panellets, usually accompanied by deliciously sweet Moscatel wine.

Historically, our way of celebrating these particular days has its roots in a funeral feast where people ate high-energy food to help them through the vigil held in honour of the dead. Once again we can almost see parallels with a Celtic wake.

Nowadays Barcelona keeps part of this tradition alive with the delicious panellets that are to be found everywhere in its cake-shops, bakeries and on its streets. They are made in a wide variety of flavours and there’s one for every taste. You’ll also be tempted by the crunchy roasted chestnuts that fill the city with a special aroma.

Come to celebrate La Castañada with us. Looking forward to meeting you at Hotel Century Park Barcelona.
